Analyzing the core\ndump with drgn, I found that the waiter had already woken up and moved\non to a completely unrelated code path, clobbering what was previously\ndata->task. Meanwhile, the waker was passing the clobbered garbage in\ndata->task to wake_up_process(), leading to the crash.\n\nWhat's happening is that in between rq_qos_wake_function() deleting the\nwaitqueue entry and calling wake_up_process(), rq_qos_wait() is finding\nthat it already got a token and returning. The race looks like this:\n\nrq_qos_wait() rq_qos_wake_function()\n==============================================================\nprepare_to_wait_exclusive()\n data->got_token = true;\n list_del_init(&curr->entry);\nif (data.got_token)\n break;\nfinish_wait(&rqw->wait, &data.wq);\n ^- returns immediately because\n list_empty_careful(&wq_entry->entry)\n is true\n... return, go do something else ...\n wake_up_process(data->task)\n (NO LONGER VALID!)-^\n\nNormally, finish_wait() is supposed to synchronize against the waker.\nBut, as noted above, it is returning immediately because the waitqueue\nentry has already been removed from the waitqueue.\n\nThe bug is that rq_qos_wake_function() is accessing the waitqueue entry\nAFTER deleting it. Note that autoremove_wake_function() wakes the waiter\nand THEN deletes the waitqueue entry, which is the proper order.\n\nFix it by swapping the order. We also need to use\nlist_del_init_careful() to match the list_empty_careful() in\nfinish_wait().",

"scenario": "AV:L - The vulnerable code is in the block layer's rq_qos throttling, reached through ordinary bio submission from local syscalls (write/fsync/fallocate PUNCH_HOLE) on any blk-mq-backed filesystem or block device. There is no network-facing protocol parsing involved, so local access is required.\nAC:L - The attacker controls both sides of the race \u2014 waiters are created by saturating the wbt queue depth with concurrent IO, and the wakers are completions of that same attacker-generated IO plus the wbt scale-up timer. The crash was observed occurring naturally under production load, so an attacker deliberately generating heavy concurrent IO can reproduce it reliably.\nPR:L - No capability check, LSM hook, or privilege gate exists anywhere on the path from submit_bio through rq_qos_throttle to rq_qos_wait. Any unprivileged local user who can write to a file or punch holes in one on a device with writeback throttling (enabled by default via CONFIG_BLK_WBT_MQ=y) can reach the vulnerable code.\nUI:N - Exploitation requires only that the attacker submit IO from their own processes; no action by another user or administrator is needed. The race is driven entirely by the attacker's own workload.\nS:U - The corruption occurs within kernel memory and is exploited by a local user against the same kernel, with no crossing of a virtualization, IOMMU, or sandbox authority boundary. This is a standard in-kernel privilege-escalation scope.\nC:H - This is a use-after-free/use-after-scope on the waiter's stack frame, and the stale pointer is dereferenced as a task_struct in try_to_wake_up(), causing wide type-confused reads (p->__state, p->on_rq, p->on_cpu, p->se) from an attacker-influenceable address. Per kernel UAF guidance this yields an information-disclosure primitive over arbitrary kernel memory.\nI:H - try_to_wake_up() performs raw_spin_lock_irqsave(&p->pi_lock) \u2014 an atomic write to a kernel address derived from reused stack contents \u2014 and then modifies scheduler fields and enqueues the fake task on a runqueue. Combined with the attacker's ability to influence what overwrites that stack slot, this gives a write and control-flow-relevant corruption primitive.\nA:H - The reported failure mode is an immediate kernel oops (supervisor write page fault in _raw_spin_lock_irqsave from IRQ context), and it can also corrupt scheduler state or run-queue linkage. Any such crash or scheduler corruption is a full denial of service, repeatable at will by an unprivileged user."
