nilfs2: fix use-after-free of timer for log writer thread
In the Linux kernel, the following vulnerability has been resolved:

nilfs2: fix use-after-free of timer for log writer thread

Patch series "nilfs2: fix log writer related issues".

This bug fix series covers three nilfs2 log writer-related issues,
including a timer use-after-free issue and potential deadlock issue on
unmount, and a potential freeze issue in event synchronization found
during their analysis. Details are described in each commit log.

This patch (of 3):

A use-after-free issue has been reported regarding the timer sc_timer on
the nilfs_sc_info structure.

The problem is that even though it is used to wake up a sleeping log
writer thread, sc_timer is not shut down until the nilfs_sc_info structure
is about to be freed, and is used regardless of the thread's lifetime.

Fix this issue by limiting the use of sc_timer only while the log writer
thread is alive.
AV:L - The bug lives in the nilfs2 log-writer (segctord) lifecycle and is triggered through local filesystem activity plus teardown of the mount (nilfs_put_super → nilfs_detach_log_writer); there is no remote or network-facing path to fs/nilfs2/segment.c.
AC:L - The attacker controls both sides of the race — ordinary file writes arm sc_timer via nilfs_transaction_commit() → nilfs_segctor_start_timer() (expires = jiffies + sc_interval, 5s default), and the log-writer thread's exit is driven by the unmount, while the window can be widened arbitrarily by leaving lots of dirty data so nilfs_segctor_write_out() spends seconds in disk I/O (and nilfs_segctor_notify() even re-arms the timer after the thread is dead).
PR:L - The dangling-timer condition is created by ordinary unprivileged file writes on the mounted nilfs2 volume, and in realistic deployments (desktops/kiosks with udisks2 or autofs managing removable nilfs2 media, appliances where mount lifecycle is user-driven) an unprivileged local user also controls when the volume is unmounted, so no root capability is inherently needed beyond basic access to the mount.
UI:N - No victim action is needed — the attacker's own file writes and the mount teardown (automounter expiry, media eject, or routine unmount) suffice; nothing must be opened or accepted by another user.
S:U - The corruption occurs in kernel memory (a freed task_struct) within the same kernel security authority; no VM, IOMMU, or sandbox boundary is crossed.
C:H - nilfs_construction_timeout() dereferences sci->sc_timer_task, which is never cleared when nilfs_segctor_thread() exits, so wake_up_process() operates on a freed kthread task_struct; this use-after-free lets an attacker who reclaims that memory read and infer kernel state, and per kernel scoring practice a UAF is treated as High confidentiality impact.
I:H - try_to_wake_up() writes into the freed task_struct (p->__state, p->on_rq, scheduler entity fields) and dereferences p->sched_class function pointers, giving a write primitive and potential control-flow hijack if the slab memory is reallocated with attacker-sprayed content.
A:H - Even without successful heap grooming, the stale timer firing on freed memory corrupts scheduler state and reliably produces a KASAN splat, oops, or kernel panic, and the fault occurs during unmount so the system is left in an inconsistent state."
